I'm taking on a challenge. Today. And you're all invited!
I consistently write about making changes and stepping out of comfort zones. Today I'm putting my money where my mouth is. Why? Because I can't grow without challenge and struggle.
Perhaps some of you have heard of Seth Godin? He's an author and blogger I credited recently in my blog Uncertainty is Part of Life. He's offered a challenge to us bloggers to post every day for seven days. The rule is this: "You can write about anything you want, but the post has to share a perspective - no trivial posts about your lunch! The idea is to ship something that pushes you out of your comfort zone."
For me, the goal is to get comfortable with a new action, to learn by repetition. By taking on the challenge with a group, accountability and expectation is higher.
Recently, and for no reason other than boredom, I decided to take on the challenge of kneeling on a stability ball. It began as I was waiting for my client to show up at the gym (she is persistently flexible with her punctuality); I needed something to do and challenging activities suit me. Once I started, it turned into an obsession to stretch my balancing time.
The wondrous illustration this activity provided is adaptability when learning new skills. It's an incredible gift to see our ability to adapt to stress in real time! It was also fascinating to observe which clients would take on the challenge after watching me and just how long they would stick with it.
So why take on a challenge to write a blog every day for seven days?
* It's something I've never done
* An opportunity to reinforce my current learning topics
* A sense of accomplishment
* Experimenting with neuroplacticity by engaging in a new task consistently
* It's good for search engine rankings
* Why not?
* Joining a community of like minded people
* I need one more item on my agenda (not)
So there you have it! Now I'm accountable to all of you.
Trying something new while fearing what others think of us - that we'll look stupid - takes courage!
What courageous seven day challenge will you take on and share? Let me know!
