Ready To Make Lasting Changes?
We've all made New Year's resolutions at one time or another, they're not unlike the kinds of goals we set after partaking in a weekend workshop aimed at personal growth; we're sure that this time we're going to stick with it and change for good.
We all know how that story ends. And, studies continue to report the lack of success in New Year's resolutions.
We all have goals for change and many of us hope that the start of a new year will bring the clean slate we need to finally take charge and make change happen! If yours haven't come to fruition in the past, have you figured out why? Most often it's because of all or nothing thinking. We make enormous goals with no room for correction, lapses, patience, or forgiveness. Then when we slip up we have our excuse for giving up; it's an all or nothing, right or wrong, good or bad, and win or lose game.
What can you do to make a difference in the coming year? Setting SMART goals is a great beginning! These are goals that are Specific, Measurable, Action oriented, Realistic, and have a Timeline. All of these pieces need to be in place for an optimum chance at success; please note the word realistic.
Whether you have a fitness or weight loss goal, a goal to improve a business venture, a goal to implement mindfulness, or a goal to create deeper connections with those you care about, they'll all have the same key pieces:
* Name the goal (the outcome you want) and why you want it
* Name the actions required to bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be
* Break the actions down into realistic and measurable chunks based on where you are now
* Give yourself a realistic timeline for completing this first action step
Review your goal regularly to be sure it continues to reflect your long term vision. It's not unusual for priorities to shift with each goal success. And, as confidence and momentum builds with your success, your vision widens to capture the full view of your potential.
Helping you visualize, create, and succeed using SMART goals is the one of the many hats a wellness coach wears. If you'd like to make lasting changes and you're uncertain where to begin, or if you'd like the accountability and support that's often lacking when we create our goals, do something different this year and commit to making the changes you desire with the guidance of a wellness coach.
